I’m currently sat in my home office. The sun is shining. For the first time in weeks, it’s a comfortable temperature for a dog walk. Bella, my fireball Cocker Spaniel, is staring expectantly into my eyes.
And I’ll be honest…
I’m really tempted to stop writing and take her for a walk.
Probably because there’s a nagging voice in the back of my mind questioning why you should listen to me about email marketing.
And maybe you shouldn’t.
I’m a big believer in learning from people that have successfully applied something multiple times. That’s why I study the work of marketers like Gary Halbert, Dan Kennedy, and Jay Abraham. They’ve been directly responsible for producing millions in sales for multiple companies, in various different industries.
If you want to learn how to build an email list, you can’t go far wrong studying copywriters like Ben Settle and Jay White, or online business owners like Ramit Sethi and James Altucher.
It’s good for you that I’m not on the same level as those guys. Why? Because I can communicate with you one-on-one and help you use email in your specific business.
Whilst you’re snowed under in work, I’m geeking out on this stuff and filtering out the rubbish. Which means you only get the good stuff… in quick-to-absorb, bite-sized chunks.
I also believe wholeheartedly that every business on the planet would benefit from email marketing. Yes — that includes small, local, offline businesses.
Here are some of the reasons why:
1. Email outperforms every other online marketing channel.
According to a 2014 study by McKinsey and Co, email marketing outperforms social media marketing in terms of conversion rates by 40X!
2. “Don’t build your brand on rented land.”
I learned this phrase from Alastair Banks, Director of Optix Solutions in Exeter. The point is: it’s a huge risk to build a business on a platform you don’t own.
Facebook can change its policies overnight, Google can change its algorithms and cut your traffic down to nothing (and it has).
But with an email list, your audience is your own. You have a direct line to your customers that nobody else can take away.
3. It scales beautifully.
Most marketing efforts don’t last — they’re created once, seen once, then they’re gone forever. But once you write a great email, you can use it over and over again … whether you have 100 people on your list or 1 million.
4. It’s a path to big profits.
Acquiring new customers is expensive, so most successful businesses make the majority of their profits on the back end (in other words: by selling something else to existing customers).
Email is the perfect platform from which to do this. It’s a free line of communication for staying top of mind with customers, building trust, and sharing your sales message.
5. Build a relationship with your audience.
Most people that visit your website never return. But there’s a small percentage of visitors that like what you’re doing and raise there hand and say, “Yes, I want to hear more!” Those are the people you want to give your time and attention to.
