Title - Put boundaries around different information systems Tags - informationsystems zettelkasten gtd

It’s important to draw boundaries against different types of information system.

Some categories are:

  1. Knowledge

This is any information that doesn’t contain action steps, is not related to a specific project, and is simply knowledge you have acquired - and which you can work with to making connections and generate new ideas. This could be stored in a Zettelkasten archive like The Archive.

  1. Actions/projects

Actions are things to do; projects are groups of more than one action. Actions and projects are typically documented as lists. You could use simple bullet points on paper or in digital form. Or a more complex project management tool like Asana.

  1. Reference material

This is information related to a particular project, or material that might be useful to call upon in the future, but should not be classified as knowledge (e.g. a letter from the doctor). There are physical and digital reference databases - e.g OneDrive/Dropbox and a file drawer.

When you have different types of information, it gets confusing quickly, and makes it hard to move forward.
