I was with a client in his office and someone rang the doorbell.

Ben walked down the stairs and opened the door.

The person began to sob, there was a moment of silence, and an emoptiponal conversation began.

I couldn’t hear what either of them were saying.

All I could think was, “why would someone go to a mortgage broker if they were upset?”

Anyway…

A few minutes later, Ben closed the door, climbed the stairs, opened the door, and dropped into the chair.

“It was the wife of one of my clients,” Ben said, followed by a pause. “He passed away suddenly at the weekend.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” I replied.

Ben looked like he still had something on his mind, so I stayed quiet.

“They wanted to know what would happen to his mortgage and other loans.”

I nodded in understanding.

“He always refused to take out any cover.”

Ben’s sadness turned to frustration.

“What can I say to make people take out life insurance?”

Ben had acted as my mortgage broker when Maria and I bought our first property.
