Title - When Jad nearly killed Nan Jasmine Tags - callumstory

My 88-year-old great grandma rolled toward the busy supermarket car park.

She was a big German lady with a prickly chin that spiked your face like a stinging nettle when she pulled you in for a bear-hug.

On this bright but crisp November morning, she had asked my pre-teen brother to escort her around Lidl in a wheelchair. Big mistake.

We hadn’t even made it through the sliding front doors when Jarrod became distracted by a girl. He let go of the wheelchair handles and forgot to apply the brakes.

The combination of nan’s weight and an incline caused the chair to roll almost immediately toward the busy car park.

It took a couple of seconds before Jarrod snapped out of his trance and raced in nan’s direction.

He tried to grab the handles but his muscles were no match for a rolling 100+ kg weight, so he resigned to the inevitable and stopped dead on the spot.

Nan, on the other hand, was cool as a cucumber.

As she began to pick up pace, she glanced over her shoulder to see what all the commotion was about.

Despite discovering there was nobody at the helm, she simply turned her head and sat back to enjoy the ride.

She flew past the trolley park, two barricades, and span a few shoppers in circles as she caught them by surprise.

The ground eventually levelled out and we watched nan settle to a stop about 50 metres away from her starting point.

We hurried over.

On arrival, nan gave us her typically-serious German stare.

Then, all of a sudden, she let out a hearty chuckle.

“Can we do some shopping now?”
