Around 8 months ago, I was contacted by two women in the same week.
I won’t disclose their names so let’s call them Karen and Jess.
Both Jess and Karen had suffered from miscarriages in the past - and both were now 9 weeks pregnant.
Given their history, they wanted to see their baby and make sure everything was ok.
It was 3-5 weeks until their first NHS scan, so they both decided to arrange a private early pregnancy scan.
Thankfully, Jess and Karen’s both gave birth to beautiful, healthy baby boy’s.
Recently, I was delighted to receive an email from Karen and Jess - this time, around a month apart.
That’s when it struck me how similar their previous pregnancy journey’s were - and how different their experience seemed to be this time around.
Even by email, it was clear that Karen felt calmn, composed, and relaxed.
Jess, on the other hand, was a bundle of nerves - convinved that something would go wrong.
Why were they feeling so different?
At the time, I had absolutely no idea.
But after scanning them both, all became clear.
In the last pregnancy, when I first spoke to Karen and Jess, they eventually chose to have a private early pregnancy scan in different places.
At the time (and still to this day) scan appointments at Sneak-A-Peek were in short supply. Jess was understandably anxious to see her baby, so she decided to have a scan at a clinic with an appointment the day after she emailed me. Karen, despite also being anxious, decided to wait for an appointment with me a week later.
- on their last pregnancy - Karen (who was now as cool as a cucumber) had chosen a private scan where she could see her baby’s heart beating, ask lots of questions, and had time to take it all in and reassure herself that her pregnancy was viable and going to progress well.
Jess, on the other hand, had a scan that felt rushed. There was little time to ask questions. Even though she’d seen her baby’s heart beating, she left feeling almost as nervous as before the scan, with many unanswered questions, doubts and fears.
Their scan experience set the tone for their pregnancy, and now, for their next pregnancy as well.
How could a scan possibly make such a difference?
The answer is simple. It’s not the scan itself that puts your mind at ease. It’s what you discover about your baby’s health, about how they are developing, and how well your questions, doubts and concerns are answered.
It’s one thing for a sonographer to have a quick look around, convince themselves that your baby is healthy, and show you the door.
It’s an entirely different experience when you are welcomed into a peaceful environment and allowed to relax, ask as many questions as you want, discover what the black and white squiggles on the screen represent, and see that the sonographer is taking as much time as necessary to thoroughly assess your baby’s development.
That’s what makes Sneak-A-Peek Ultrasound different.
Finally - a truly intimate pregnancy scan!
