What will I be able to see on the scan?
The short answer is that a scan can detect a pregnancy as early as 6 weeks (unless the ultrasound machine is older and less sensitive than ours) and you can see more and more of your baby as your pregnancy progresses.
I created an infographic to demonstrate what you can see on a scan at different gestations, from 6 to 40 weeks.
If you’re in early pregnancy and wondering about the best timing, here’s what I recommend:
-
If you want some reassurance ASAP, you’re confident of your dates, and you’re prepared to have an internal scan if we can’t see your baby through your abdomen, then 6 weeks is fine.
-
On the other hand, if you’re not so confident in your dates, or you’d rather wait than have an internal scan, then I recommend scheduling an appointment for when you’re 8 weeks or more.
If you’re still unsure, we can discuss it. Contact me by completing the enquiry form or requesting an appointment for an early pregnancy scan (fastest if you’re likely to want an appointment).
