When you start at the top (e.g. Chairman) and are introduced to someone below (e.g. CFO), you are not required to divulge what you have discussed with the Chairman to the CFO - and the CFO will know it. Meaning, they will know that your conversations with them will probably end up being relayed to the top - so they have to be very careful. You can say “off the record, what do you think of this?” to lower barriers but knowing that it’s really on on the record.
